The event scheduled for 5th – 9th April 2010 is to be held under the theme “Re – alignment of Library and Information Science (LIS) Education to meet the emerging Information Management Challenges in the Knowledge Society.”
EASLIS was started in 1963 as a centre for the training of library manpower to work in libraries and archival institutions in Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania. In its early days however, EASLIS attracted students from beyond the East African region including Malawi, Zambia, Madagascar and other countries.

The week will feature activities including: Exhibitions, LIS Career Talks, LIS Academic Debates, Essay Competition and LIS Symposium. The fair comes at a very defining moment in the history of knowledge access in Uganda. The enactment of the school library policy has stalled for many years, with the Ministry of Education and Sports seeking guarantees that such a policy will not have any financial implications.
Uganda’s national and public library networks are in a perennial need of staffing and stocking with the latest books, computers and other equipment.
While university libraries are trying to come to terms with increased enrolments and low budgets for procuring the all important learning resources. The situation of records and archives also needs attention.
The LIS Education fair is a good step by the oldest LIS training institution in the region to not only reclaim its status but also restore confidence that some innovative solutions to the above challenges can be found. « Back to News Briefs |
